The drug has been licensed in more than 250 countries to treat arthritis pain.
The UK’s Royal College of Surgeons has issued a safety alert and the European Commission has approved a decision to license the drug.

The drugs, called ibuprofen-containing products, have not yet been approved by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency for use in the UK.
The drugs are also used to treat pain in the knee, ankle and shoulder joints.
The licence will require manufacturers to prove that the drug is the most appropriate for use by the patient, as well as to provide a summary of what has been shown to work for each individual.
The MHRA said that it will continue to review the drug in the UK for any positive and non-prospective data.
The MHRA will review the licence from the European Commission in June, and will take an updated decision on whether or not it is appropriate to use the drug.
The MHRA’s review will be led by Dr Paul Davies, chair of the Royal College of Surgeons, as the licence is reviewed.
Dr Davies said: “The licence for the drug is currently being reviewed by the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS). It is currently in the process of review and the regulatory body has determined that the benefits and risks are not yet known.
“This is the second time this year the Royal College of Surgeons has issued a safety alert and the MHRA is continuing to review the drug’s effectiveness.”
The RCS said it had received “very encouraging” reports of patients suffering serious and potentially life-threatening side effects from the drugs.
They added that the drugs have been licensed for use in the UK for at least six months and they had been previously available for use in the UK for one year.
The NHS, on the other hand, will continue to review the drug, and has now reviewed the safety of ibuprofen and the risks of adverse reactions to it.
Patients on ibuprofen, who suffer from pain or fever, will be prescribed the drug as well as other painkillers, anti-inflammatories and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
