Background: The use of ibuprofen and acetaminophen has been reported in patients with musculoskeletal injuries. Ibuprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of ibuprofen and acetaminophen on the development and treatment of pain in patients with arthroscopy-proven postoperative pain syndrome, as well as the effect of NSAID therapy on the progression of pain after operation.
Methods: A prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial was performed in a multicenter, randomized clinical trial setting. Patients were randomly assigned to receive either ibuprofen (n = 20) or acetaminophen (n = 20), or placebo (n = 20) at 0, 4, 6, and 12 months following surgery and the postoperative pain score (PPS) was recorded by the investigator. Pain was assessed using the Pain scale.
Results: After the 4-month postoperative treatment, the mean PPS was 11.5 and the mean pain score was 9.4. There was a significant reduction in the mean PPS at 6 months (P = 0.003). However, no difference was noted between ibuprofen and acetaminophen treatment in the control group, and there was no difference between the ibuprofen and acetaminophen treatment in the PPS of patients with postoperative arthrosis.
Conclusion: In patients with arthroscopy-proven postoperative pain syndrome, ibuprofen and acetaminophen is not inferior to placebo at the 6-month stage. Ibuprofen is better tolerated than acetaminophen, as a first-line treatment. NSAID therapy should be continued until the PPS is at least 9.5.
